The double lock insulated wall system is built using blocks made of closed cell
polyurethane. The blocks are thirty two inches in length, eight niches high, and eight inches wide. Within the block itself,
there are four five inch by five inch cavities that are used to receive concrete and rebar. |
This wall system has many outstanding characteristics, but perhaps the most important one at
this time is that it is price competitive with conventional construction. In addition, by using the product, the builder gains
the many benefits not available in conventional construction. Based on competing estimates provided by outside builders, this
product is at least as cheap to use as the best methods of standard building. In many cases it significantly less expensive,
yet it still yields many greater benefits compared to conventional construction methods in terms of strength, energy savings
(which are in addition to the cost savings at the time of installation), and tremendous comfort and sound protection.
The completed system has tremendous compressive strength when compared to conventional wood
construction. The 15,000 pound per square inch compressive strength is about twenty times that of a completed wood wall. This
great strength is mainly derived from the use of concrete and rebar. Below grade, all 5X5 cells are filled with 2500 psi
concrete, also known as five bag mix. As the cells are filled, they also contain one rod of half inch rebar which contributes
to the great strength. In addition to the vertical columns of concrete, at every four foot horizontal interval, a lintel or
bond beam is poured solid, tying together all of the vertical columns of concrete. Rebar is also placed in this horizontal
bond beam, providing additional support. Thus, the type of construction is really a very traditional form of post and beam
which utilizes concrete and rebar for its strength and support. In addition to providing
a form for the concrete, the double lock building wall provides a high degree of insulation. The components of the system are
manufactured from polyurethane which provides the greatest insulation value of any product currently used in the building
business today. The product has a nominal insulation rating of R-51 using the greatest path method, and an adjusted rating of
R-27.4 using the ASHRAE parallel path method. This gives a high level of insulation, and is a great assistance in the process
of saving costly energy. To put this into perspective, a 2X6 stud wall using an R-19 insulation batt, which is about the
highest level of conventional construction, yields a final adjusted insulation value of R-13 to R-14, which is about half of
the rating yielded using the double lock insulated wall system.
