UL Standard 723 entitled "Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials" describes the equipment and methods used to establish the surface burning characteristics of building materials.

In addition to its use and Recognition in the major building codes in this country, UL 723 has been approved by the American National Standard Institute as (A2 5). It is also a standard of the American Society for Testing and Materials and the National Fire Protection Association, under designations ASTM E84, and NFPA No. 255, respectively.

The Classification of Listing Marking of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. on the product is the only method provided by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to identify products which have been produced under its Classification or Listing, and Follow-Up Service Program.
